Progress Theatre

  • About
The Theatre is Reading's oldest working theatre, opened in 1951 by the Progress Theatre company, which was itself established in 1947.

In addition to running its own 97-seat theatre, Progress stages the 350-seat Reading Abbey Ruins Open Air Shakespeare in partnership with Reading Borough Council each summer.

If you have never been to the theatre, or have not visited us for a while, there is no better time to come.

Over the last couple of years we have brightened up the foyer with a lick of paint and new lighting. In displays that change with each of our productions we show some fabulous art from local artists. We have fitted a new bar which is greatly appreciated – as are our low bar prices! A new heating system will help all in the winter months … it may be cold outside, but it certainly won’t be inside.
