Highlights
-
I'm in post production of The World Without You, a SAG feature film which I am executive producer, creative producer and lead actor.
-
When I retired from my career as a nurse, I embarked on a journey that led to my current passion—acting, and then producing. When I decided to pursue a vehicle that I could both produce and star in, I read various scripts, but nothing really spoke to me. I was then presented with the book “The World Without You”, by Joshua Henkin. I immediately connected with the character of the mother, Marilyn. Not only did I see similarities in our personalities, I felt connected on a visceral level. Like me, she came from a medical background, as a doctor. On a deeper level, I identified with her need to always maintain a tight control over her emotions, and then to watch that all unravel over the course of the three day period described in the book, really spoke to me.
In the book, Marilyn and her husband, David, are trying to deal with the death of their adult child. When I saw how the loss of her son affected the family as a whole, and each person individually, I knew I needed to be part of the telling of this powerful story. Fortunately, I was able to secure the rights to the book, and we found an excellent screenwriter, Daniel Pulick, who transformed the story into a powerful script.
We assembled a cast of actors who were passionate about the story, which is a critical element in this kind of project. Each person was able to connect with their character and their story. I think this will distinguish this story from other projects out there.
Loss of a family member, particularly a child, no matter the age, is an unimaginable loss that you can never get over, made even worse if violence is involved. You can’t help but be moved by this story that portrays the struggle to find a world without that person in it.
One aspect of the story that really appealed to me was the strong female characters with very real struggles and conflicts, within themselves and with each other. Seeing that play out is very compelling.
Unfortunately, violence is part of the world we live in. I think many people will identify with the family’s struggle to come to terms with his death.
There have been many films that deal with death and its immediate repercussions, but few that show the carnage left behind a year later. I hope the audience connects to this story as profoundly as I did.
