From 1st March 2011, the Advertising Standards Authority will police commercial website, such as employment agencies.

The digital remit of the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is to be extended significantly to deliver more comprehensive consumer protection online.

The ASA's present remit online includes ads in paid-for space and sales promotions wherever they appear. But from next year, the rules in the UK Code of Non-broadcast Advertising, Sales Promotion and Direct Marketing (the CAP Code) will apply in full to marketing communications online, including the rules relating to misleading advertising, social responsibility and the protection of children.

The Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) decided to extend the ASA's remit following a formal recommendation from a wide cross-section of UK industry. CAP has today published a document detailing the new remit and sanctions.

The remit will apply to all sectors and all businesses and organisations regardless of size and will come into force on 1 March 2011. This follows a six month period of grace which will allow the ASA and CAP to conduct training work to raise awareness and educate business on the requirements of the CAP Code, particularly amongst those who may not previously have been subject to ASA regulation.

All advertisers, website owners and agencies are urged to sign up to CAP Services to be kept informed on upcoming training dates and advice.

We're v grateful, Clive, for all the hard work you put in :)

Just found this clause in the T&C's of the London Extra Agency (which several of us have had bad experience of!) whcih states:

"Failure to adhere to 'the lea' terms and conditions after understanding and accepting the terms and conditions can result in any action deemed appropriate by management at 'the lea'."

ANY action, eh?! Wow - watch out for the lads arriving after dark with the sawn-off if you've had the gall to complain about the fact they scam you out of an upfront fee and then never get you any work because you can't activate your profile and there's no contact telephone number!! You have been warned!! :)

Since March 2011 the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) have increased their powers to cover commercial website content. Now we are starting to get a picture of just how widespread the agency scams really are, as if we did not know...

Four adjudications came through quite recently, more are in the pipeline...

http://www.asa.org.uk/ASA-action/Adjudications/2011/11/7-Models/SHP_ADJ_170240.aspx

All three of the above websites were set up by the same person, now they have registered another one: http://www.newlookmodels.co.uk

This one has no connection with those above:

Expect more... and more and more - as 'The Stage' aptly said in 2006...
