| Topic: How do you make compress a 120mb file to CCP's 40MB? | ||

| Hi all ye wise people of the green room. Can anyone advise on how to compress my showreel file down to 40MB which seems to be the max for CCP, without destroying the quality completely? Many thanks in advance for any help. Sim Editorial comment | ||

| I think Chris means 200 mb not mG. Good Compression is easy depending what edit suite you're coming off. I use compress via a .mov ( Quicktime Compression) file with a H.264 Compression. Avid, Final Cut. Adobe and iMovie can all do this when you get to Share or Export I bet other systems do as well! Just remember to Customise the settings. ie Size if Footage is 16:9 ( True widescreen ) Go for a size divisible by this ratio 720 : 405 is a common one or 1280 :720 For quality of Picture try to go with Medium or low medium as High or Excellent don't add much more but do add Mb's!! Sound just go average / normal unless Better is needed. Any extra help is no problem. Best To all! ;-) | |

| Guy has given you v good advice. Also 512 x 288 is a good size ratio ...especially on youtube ....for Standard Def Video though....not HD. Compression using H264 in a Quicktime container is good...also MPeg4 is good too. If your file is a .AVI file good old windows movie maker will compress it well to a .WMV file too! Makes quite a good job of compressing .AVI files in actual fact. Would be a help to know what file format and ratio size your current file is to guide you further. | |

| Yeah Apologies, Mark is right ( As always :-) !! ) me being a bit of a Machead ( Read into that what you will! ;-) ) at times I forget Windows moviemaker and .wmv and .avi which is as good as .mov . If you have problems converting files again Zamzar conversions are great and FREE!! I have no shares in them but a lot of respect!! Also I can't speak highly enough of Dropbox another free service for File Transfers of film +. Best to all! ;-) | |

| Thanks guys. Chris, I have a mac too but not quite advanced enough to be a machead yet! The file is a .mov and is 125mb in size. When I import it into Final Cut HD and try to export I dont get the compression option available. I can obviously convert it into a miriad of formats but that is it. If Chris at CCP allows me 200mb it should be fine except it looks like for quality there are other factors that need to be looked at. I downloaded it as it is onto T and P to test and the quality is poor so there must be other factors at play behind the scenes (the original file is crisp as ice) Here is the link from that if anyone can do use it to check the properties etc. http://tandp.tv/play/?vidid=1082 Thanks | |

| Hi Sim, You always have options ;-) To find any file size on a mac highlight it and then on file do get info. You'll always see file size. Ok When you get to export on FCP ,FCE or iMovie use export using Quicktime Conversion This is very Important that it's Quicktime conversion not Quicktime Movie. Then click options in here you can change al the settings as I've listed above. Key Frames every 6 frames and the such like. Once you've finished exporting .mov to the desk top check file size by highlighting and doing file get info. If it's over size again tweak by changing size and quality in options and re export with new name. Hope this all helps! If not please contact again! Best to all. ;-) | |

| Hi Sim....I just played a lot of it on the T&P site...played perfectly for me...and if it plays on my clapped out office PC (seperate machine from my super fast editing PC) it should play on anything! A lot of playability issues are down to your grapshics card, the drivers, and the broadband speed you are getting at the time of playing. Also if you have a virus scanner and or other Progs running in the background at the time...it will bugger up any quality video playback. I think Guy is your man as he is much more Mac than I am (MAC HEAD!) You could also open up a free account with Exsposure Room, and load up the whole file...overnight....and they will compress it to a flash file in 3 formats LOW (good to views) MED (very good) or even HD...you can then download the encoded files I belive. I'd get it into FCP and then follow guys instructions for output. You could also shorten it and or do a bit more edting on it to show you off all the more (lowers the final file size too!) ...as it's a bit long at the moment...to use as a reel. Good luck with it. | |

| Thanks Mark. We'll get there in the end. Edit it to show me off more? Not quite sure what you mean there? I know it's a little long perhaps. Oh boy. You maybe right. Maybe it would be a good idea to open it up to more feedback. I've only showed it to a couple of people in the industry so far and asked for feedback. | |

| ...what I meant was....as a showreel, you need to just highlight yourself as well as the other actors...quite often long segments of film that has been edited for a viewing audience ...is not as punchy on a showreel which casting directors and agents etc are looking at. Therefore if after 35-45 seconds a casting Dir has seen you being angry in a scene.....they won't need to see the full edit of that scene...but would maybe prefer to cut to another scene and contrasting mood. Less is more and all that....that's all. | |
