| Topic: What to do in the inbetween | ||
|---|---|---|
| Okay, I know, I know I brought this on myself the moment I stood up and said, 'Hey, I'm gonna be an actor,' but I am going crazy with doing nothing between jobs. Add to that the fact bills have to be paid and rent has to be paid and my friends, all of whom are either students or have regular jobs and wanting to meet up 'after work'. I'm going stark raving mad here. So what do you guys do? What do you do in between work to a) keep yourself sane and busy and b)earn some valuable pennies to pay those bills? Save a girl from permanent insanity, please. | ||

| Yes. Start on the road to respectability and you'll find that there are a lot of no u turn signs. eBay is good I sell my animated film through that and I sell my toy theatre book through blurb.com but like acting it's up and down. | |

| Ok hon, you wanna be acting right? So you need to actively find something that you're happy to do and fits in - even if it means doing some sort of training first GO FOR IT! Don't sit around, find something where there's a certain amount of flexiblity and earns you money. | |

| I do private tutoring using the stuff I did before I became an actor (physics, engineering, maths). If you have a degree in any subject you can become a tutor with the tutoring agencies that are out there. I signed up with the biggest, Fleet Tutors, and learned the tutoring ropes with them. They organise your enhanced CRB check too. The neat thing about private tutoring is that you have complete control over how much you do, where and when. I tell my tutees that auditions and acting jobs will always take precedence and it's never caused a problem. In fact, most of them quite like being tutored by an actor because they think it's glamorous!!! I'm no longer with Fleet Tutors but am confident enough now to go-it-alone. I recommend Fleet because they provide support and free training. A word of caution: some weeks there's no tutoring work at all (August, for example). At the moment, on the other hand, exams are coming up and I'm busy, fitting in my tutees with rehearsals for a fringe job I'm doing. Good luck in finding something suitable! | |

| to pass the time i usually try to watch films and plays, it's good research too. I also meet up with other acting buddies every now and then for a coffee and if i get stuck for cash i do promotional work. It pays really, really well and it's usually only two or three hours here and there. Very simple to do and sometimes it can be very interesting too, especially if it's for a big Disney tour and you get to watch the show rehearse for free while you work! | |

| Thanks guys! I defiantly want to be acting, it's been my life for 12 years! It's just the annoying things like bills and rent that has to be paid. Gotta love it. I appreciate your suggestions, and those who PM'ed me. I got some good promo and temping sites to look at - so thank you! Jodie | |

| You could join a teaching agency - it's flexible and the pay is kind of reasonable - and the hours are pretty damn good! I scrape by doing that! | |

| Cathy, Funnily enough I have just joined a teaching agency. I've applied for some TA and classroom support roles as well as reception/exams stuff. Thanks! I hope this will help others stuck in this situation too! J | |

| It's hard I know but all worth it in the end. We hope! Personally, I find it very helpful to go back home and visit family for a week or so. For me, that really keeps me grounded and sane! I love actors, but if I spend too much time with certain actors it can make me go slightly mad. I would also suggest updating your repertoire of audition pieces - songs and speeches and possibly even dances. You never know when you might need them! And of course the jobs you can get on Casting Call Pro are good for adding variety and I find worth doing even if they are sometimes unpaid. Leigh-Ann | |
