Hi chaps,

I am psychologically prepping myself for a day of writing to casting directors, actors yearbook / contacts on one side, milk chocolate digestives on t'other.

I was wondering if anyone had any super dooper tips on how to create an appealing scrawl that a cd simply cant turn down?

thanks :-)

Take on the role of a CD. Imagine the pressures you are under quickly to find the right person for the right part, without taking any risks or damaging your reputation. You already have a small collection of agents that you trust and would normally consult for any casting. You are, after all, in business and this is how you pay your rent.

Consider what would turn you on. Then write that...

My advice is: be specific. This may actually mean you have to backtrack and research more before you write. Do you know what all these casting directors you are writing to have been casting in recent years? Do you know what you are offering that will be appropriate to their needs? If you do, then fine - you sell that angle to the best of your ability, and hope that they will take some notice by placing you on file. If not, then you need to stop and research properly before you put pen to paper.

Remember also that writing to a casting director is only part of a much wider process - if you can e.g. obtain a meeting through writing a letter you have done a good job. The likelihood of you winning a job from them 'on spec' is very, very low indeed. The possibility that, even if they liked your letter and placed your details on file, you would never be made aware of this, is pretty high. So, in many ways, you must either accept that this is all part of a much longer term process that may pay off for you further down the line, but which you will have to keep pursuing over months and years, or you need to be trying to elicit specific feedback.
