Hi all,

Having seen one or two showreel related discussions - and seeing as a couple of those people were editing their showreels themselves - I thought I'd see if anyone could recommend a good video editing suite.

I put together my first showreel using some basic editing stuff a while back - it's not on here, wouldn't upload for some reason, but is on youtube - and now I have a few more bits to put in it I want to do a new edit. I tried the 30 day trial of Sony's "Vegas Movie Studio", which I have found quite user friendly and easy to use. Something I loved about it was it's "colour corrector" effect, which allowed me to play with the colour of the video - great for making the more "student" of student films look less so!

Big problems were encountered however upon rendering files, with audio falling behind the visual and going out of sync. I was then told by technical support that it cannot provide a fix for rendering files that have been encoded and then decoded before being rendered...ie. no good for videos that I have taken from dvds and other files, therefore no good for my showreel making goal?!

So, after my waffle, could anyone suggest a good alternative that is able to do the job I'm trying to do....???

Are you working on Windows or Mac?

If Mac iMovie HD can handle a lot ( You'd be surprised!!) but Final Cut Express is better if you can stretch to £120 for it. It can do basic colour correction too.

On Windows Windows Movie Maker is apparently ok but I don't have any experience of it.

Alternatively this site may help and apparently it's edit programs are free for Windows mac & Linux!!!

All the best,

Windows Movie Maker is OK, but incredible limited in functionality with pretty much everything it produces looking the same. Bland!

I use a combination of Pinnacle Studio 12 and ULead VideoStudio 11. Studio is an Avid product so packed with functionality and expandable but the downside is it's a bit technical in certain aspects and a bit on the pricey side.

The ULead product is more aimed at casual users and is my recommendation! It's simple to use, has more than enough functionality for showreel purposes and is less than £100!

My tuppence worth!

Thanks for your suggestions guys. I'm a PC.

Forbes, which would you say is the better program of the two, if I'm not put off by technical/advanced things??

Personally I prefer Pinnacle Studio probably 'cos I've been using it for years, but things like building a front end menu system is much MUCH easier in VideoStudio!

Go VideoStudio! :-)
