You may find it helpful to read some of the good books out there about the business:
e.g. Simon Dunmore - An Actors' Guide to Getting Work
Chrys Salt - Make Acting Work
Jennifer Reischel - So You Want to Tread the Boards?

Actors' Yearbook is also very useful for those starting out in the profession.

The more knowledge you have, the less likely you are to make mistakes in your approaches and the less likely you are to waste time and money.

A decent agent will only take you on if they have seen what you can do (either seeing you perform on stage or screen, or perhaps after viewing a showreel). If they will take you on without meeting you and without assessing your talent then they are not going to be able to represent you properly. Try and find out how many people they represent (and how many agents work within the agency); this can give you one indication of how much time they are likely to be able to devote to your career!

Also, I notice from your profile that you are not graduating until 2011. It is unusual (though it happens occasionally if an agent is keen enough)for agents to take people on before they graduate. I would expect a drama school to be able to give you clear advice on this subject and an ideal time to approach agents is during your final year, inviting them to productions and your final showcase.
