A dilemma I'm sure many CCPers have....

We teach to earn money when the acting work is a little quieter than usual (or just plain dead!), but the dreaded Summer Holidays are looming where we are left with no acting work, no teaching work, because all the schools/drama schools are on holiday, and no money!

What does everyone else do? I have a fringe show for a few weeks but am searching around for something else to complete the supposedly idyllic 6/7 week break!

Any bright ideas? Much appreciated! Thank you!

Why not get together with some people in the same situation and put something on yourselves? I recently did a collaborative project with some actors in my area and we devised a piece within a week so it can be done!! Find out if your local theatres have studio spaces and ask people if they fany doing a bit of proffit share. Its not going to pay all your bills but it will surely buy you food and keep you sane :)

I completely understand your dilema and it is extremely hard no to be fooled in to thinking a full time summer job is the only way. If you have to do that make sure you give yourself an end date and escape in good time before you enjoy the regular income too much. lol :D

Good Luck x

As I guess that you need to make some money in the weeks when teaching is not available, the unhelpful answer would be "do anything you can find that pays a few pence". But I guess you already know that. One thought that occurs is to find employment as a facilitator of children's programmes in holiday hotels that cater particularly for families with kids. This work involves not only keeping the kids interested in a variety of special experiences and projects, but also might well involve you and the others of the small group you'd find yourself working with in staging simple entertainments for both the kids and the adult holiday makers, thus using your skills both as a performer and a teacher. This work might be in this country or in a popular holiday destination overseas. I suggest you approach all the holiday companies with programmes in both this country and Europe, and ask them if they need such workers.
Good luck!
Peter
