The Stratford Gaff: A Serio-Comick-Bombastic-Operatic Interlude

WebsiteWebsite

2010, 15 minutes

A film featuring eleven music hall acts shown on screens to entertain commuters at Stratford Station.

Eleven acts are featured on a multi-channel video in this installation by artist Matt Stokes at Stratford Station, London. Each can be seen alongside in a lifesize portrait on a playbill. “Exploring Stratford and the wider borough of Newham through its heritage and communities has been an exciting journey,” said the Tyneside artist. Stokes discovered his performers by meeting and speaking with local residents. The Stratford Gaff takes a popular Victorian entertainment format called the penny gaff and updates it for the 21st century. Although these performances were typically held in the back rooms of pubs, this one can be seen in the glass and steel surrounds of Stratford Underground station. Matt Stokes, The Stratford Gaff: A Serio-Comick-Bombastick-Operatick-Interlude can be seen at Stratford Underground station until July 2011. Admission free.
