Prostitute takes control of her life
Dec 3 2008 by Dave Goodban, Mid Cheshire Chronicle
RAIN, performed at the Davenham Theatre last week, revolves around relationship-scarred Mia, who turns to a life of prostitution.
Hard and brutalised, Mia slowly softens, takes control of her life and quits her occupation.
Rain, named for the cleansing effect it has on Mia, isn't for the faint-hearted.
It's gritty and thought provoking, contains swearing and a scene of domestic violence.
The dark mood is lifted a little by her landlady's down-to-earth sense of humour.
But the audience is never allowed to truly relax as the two-and-a-half hour story unfolds, due to the hostile and abrasive heroine, her shocking lifestyle and the return of her egocentric and violent beau.
The cast were convincing in their roles, notably Anne Prendergast as the landlady and Hayley Taylor-Jones as Mia.
REVIEW - 24/7 Theatre Festival
Bullet Shaped Heart @ Pure: Round
"NEIL A. Edwards' powerful, angry play is set at the time of the Falklands War, although comparisons with Iraq at the moment are inescapable.
Two paratroopers, Luke (Daniel Holt) and Tiptoe (James Boyland), find themselves trapped in a derelict house in Goose Green where, with death almost literally at the doorstep, gung-ho tabloid headlines suddenly turn into brutal, frightening reality.
They're shocked to discover an Argentinian airman Ernesto (Phil Perez) also taking refuge there and even more surprised to learn that his mum comes from York!
Meanwhile, in the present day, Violet (Hayley Taylor-Jones) regales a conference with some of the daunting facts about the war. Passionate and timely."
Four stars
