About me
Roger Sansom has been in the profession since the Sixties, has worked around the British Isles and beyond. He joined Equity when theoretically at least no-one could work without membership! He has also worked around the various media. In Northern Ireland, he joined with the late Desmond Hoey in putting on educational tours. For a time he ran a small company called Barnstorm Players..
Roger is a Trustee of Logos Theatre Company, and has held other key roles including Artistic Director and Committee Chair. Logos was endowed by the late Kenneth McClellan to continue his work of performing the classics in appropriate and ungimmicky ways.
With Logos, Roger has toured schools and libraries etc., both with existing productions and in small-scale shows like "Wilde Blooms", his compilation from the great Oscar, and in his own Dickens adaptations.
For six (non-consecutive) years he did a long summer season for Macdona Productions, variously as actor/company manager/ director.
Agents have succeeded one another. For two years Roger represented himself, as a member of an actors' co-operative agency - seeing the profession from another viewpoint. He has several times served as an Equity deputy, and as a member of the London Deputies Committee.
He also became a storyteller at the Sherlock Holmes pub in London, adapting Conan Doyle's tales for the purpose.
He has toured local churches with biblical plays for Christmas and Easter etc., and with other subjects such as music hall. And given to local groups his own experiences entitled "Being an Actor".
He is a passionate advocate of good verse speaking, and has led sessions of instruction in the interpretation and delivery of Shakespeare's verse.
Though not a singer, he has often sung onstage.
(He is not the Roger Sansom of Roger Sansom Productions. Nor the improbably coincidental Roger Sansom showing online as a collector of - and dealer in? - theatre memorabilia. Namesakes in the world of theatre have been a problem for Roger the Equity member. In rep, Roger answered a telephone call which turned out to be for a local volunteer, not a professional, whom he knew by a different surname! Much of this overlapping is unclear, but it has caused confusion.)

Additional information:
Review for "The Stand Up and Down", Camden People's Theatre, 2014 and 2015:
"Special mention goes to Roger Sansom as Dizzy Dan, the sex-obsessed psychiatrist. He is like an unctuous Alfred Hitchcock, sadistically directing one of his fragile blonde goddesses."
Camden New Journal
Reviews for "Almost the Birthday Party" Etcetera Theatre, 2014:
"Exquisitely played by Gil Sutherland and Roger Sansom, the two men never move from their sofa; nevertheless, it’s a bravura performance, full of energy, wit and theatricality. The oldest members of the evening’s cast, their experience and their handling of Paul Kalburgi’s taut script gives them a gravitas that really makes them shine. Almost the Birthday Party stands out for its sheer verve and professionalism, both in the writing and the performances."
Everything Theatre
"played brilliantly by the marvellously camp Gil Sutherland and Roger Sansom ..."
So, So Gay
Review for "Autumn Music" Pentameters Theatre, 2012:
" ... his hilarious friend and drinking partner Luigi (Roger Sansom) ... gives him the encouragement he needs. Soon Eugenio is courting Isabella (Dot Smith), only to find his family has issues with her family. Particularly her brother Francesco, played by Sansom again but in even better form."
Camden New Journal
Review for "Heartbreak House" Pentameters Theatre, 2009:
"[There's a] wonderfully pompous Mangan played by Roger Sansom."
Aline Waites, Remote Goat
Review for "Twelfth Night" Pentameters Theatre, 2009:
"The key role is of Malvolio, and the company is lucky to have such a seasoned actor as Roger Sansom. His pseudo-refined accent - and his ecstasy when he reads the letter thinking his aspirational imaginings have come to pass - seems uncannily true to life."
Hampstead and Highgate Express
Review for "Ivanov" Pentameters Theatre, 2009:
"Roger Sansom is over the top and very funny as the exuberant alcoholic Borkin."
Hampstead and Highgate Express
Review for "The Wind in the Willows" Pentameters Theatre, 2008:
"Roger Sansom is a commanding, avuncular Badger"
Hampstead and Highgate Express
Review for "A Midsummer Night's Dream" Pentameters Theatre, 2008:
" ... the characters are carefully delineated, from Roger Sansom's aggressively sexual Theseus to the almost ethereal Titania of Judi Bowker."
Hampstead and Highgate Express
Review for "The Tempest" Pentameters Theatre, 2008:
"Gonzalo is given an unusually vigorous portrayal by Roger Sansom"
Hampstead and Highgate Express
Review for "Ghosts" Wimbledon Studio Theatre, 2006:
"Pastor Manders, who goes through a harrowing learning process during the course of an event-filled day, is played with extreme unction, cleverly maintained by Roger Sansom."
John Thaxter, The British Theatre Guide
Review for "The Cherry Orchard" Wimbledon Studio, 2003:
"As her slightly turned brother Gayev, endlessly potting an imaginary billiard ball into an imaginary hole, and thinking no doubt about an imaginary jackpot on the way, Roger Sansom is excellent (and funny)."
Paul Nelson, Indie London
Review for "Richard II" Landor Theatre, 2004:
"Director Roger Sansom rises well to the role of the Duke of York."
Yvonne Gordon, Streatham Gardian
Review for "Richard II" Network Theatre, 2016:
"Roger Sansom has a genuine stage presence as the Duke of York."
remotegoat
Review for "Candida", Gatehouse Theatre, 2015:
"Burgess is one of those likeable capitalist rascals that Shaw loved to feature and Roger Sansom plays him with appropriate indulgence (as cockney as Shaw wrote it)."
British Theatre Guide
Review for "Boat People" Pentameters Theatre, 2018:
"Roger Sansom’s dialogue is confined to opening the court’s business and calling the witness; nevertheless, Sansom’s facial expressions reveal all you need to know about his thoughts on the testimony."
Lee Knight, West End Wilma
Review for "Under Milk Wood" Arts Theatre, Belfast, 1974:
"The Onlooker, who was played by Roger Sansom, was superb. It was he who kept the show going, and he was seldom off the stage. He left us in no doubt about any of the characters or their backgrounds, and apart from being a very informative person he was also entertaining."
Irish News
Review for "Under Milk Wood" Arts Theatre, Belfast, 1974:
"The outstanding performance of the evening is given by Roger Sansom as the narrator. He is unobtrusive, but speaks the colourful, imaginative language with real appreciation."
Belfast Telegraph
Review for "Under Milk Wood" Arts Theatre, Belfast, 1974:
"Roger Sansom is wonderfully effective as the onlooker-narrator, taking over the Two Voices of the text: he makes the right points with the right degree of emphasis, of slyly humorous detachment or insight."
Kane Archer, Irish Times
********************
"From 1980 I had a period of time out from acting. Originally medical. I had a 'slipped disc' - possibly a delayed reaction to working on stilt boots as the Giant in "Jack and the Beanstalk". For a time I was waiting for surgery (not finally necessary at that period) and needed work one could responsibly take sick absence from at short notice. I did a sedentary job for Barnardo's children's charity. When I did pick up my acting career, I was - amazingly - offered two jobs on the same day!"
